NEWTON Abbot town centre's information signs have been given a £1,500 revamp.

Gone are the dull black signs and in their place are bright and colourful illustrated pictures of different town criers, created by Lou Jones Design.

"I felt that the totems were looking rather drab recently and the graphics needed updating and replacing and so thought this might be a good opportunity to take a good look at the whole thing and see if we could make them more impactive," said Sally Henley, town centre development manager.

"We are very grateful to the Newton Abbot mayor, Cllr Anne Fry, for making the funds available from her DCC Community Fund for this project.

"We think the designs are colourful and eye catching and the theme reflects many of the heritage activities and events which happen in the town.

"We, to this day, have a town crier who is often seen 'crying' about events in our streets — so this is also a homage to him and to his female borough crier colleague."

The five information boards are located at Boots in Courtenay Street, The Globe at the junction of Courtenay Street and Bank Street, The Union Inn at the junction of lower East St and Courtenay Street, Carpet Right in Wolborough Street, and opposite the library. They were erected four years ago as part of the refurbishment of the town centre and Newton Abbot Town Council took on the responsibility of their upkeep.

These signs are great! And full marks all round to Newton Abbot for the information service it provides to locals and tourists alike. We popped into the Tourist Information Centre on Saturday for some information on Christmas events in town and were most impressed by the glossy colour brochure we were given. It was good to see how many local businesses are backing the town through their sponsorship.
