After their joint journey delving into and probing

the depths of their household's habits in

SIX key areas : Electricity, Heating, Water, Food, Transport and Waste, our

first 14 successful KTT graduates collected their medals and finishing goodies

at a celebration at the Old Rydon in November. The two pilot groups who boldly

took up the KTT challenge have learned, laughed and shared a lot along the way.

They have found that reducing your carbon footprint can be fun as well as

useful to the household purse.

The aim is to become more aware of the areas in

your own house where consumption is the greatest and decide what you can and

want to tackle. There were plenty of successes to report including strategies

for getting teenagers to shorten their time in the shower, helping each other

out with advice and practical assistance, lending and borrowing tools and

equipment. Habits were changed and savings in energy and money were made.

Relationships were strengthened by communal visits to a local cider bar and other hostelries; other

members started going to exercise classes together. One man pointed

out that it was very interesting to talk about new topics with people you

already know. He said wryly, " it's not often you get to delve into

someone else's bills!" One chap managed to reduce his water use for his

business by half by capturing and re-using rainwater. Another spin-off was a

new home for a frisky chicken.

The KTT programme is part of the Kingsteignton

Community Plan and is supported by the Town Council and Kingscare.
