NEWTON ABBOT RFC – ROUND-UP
By NewtonAbbot People | Tuesday, February 11, 2014, 09:58
The bad weather continues to take its toll on Newton Abbot’s rugby programme, the latest match to fall foul was last Saturday’s at Old Redcliffians.
Officials at the Bristol based club had warned as early as Wednesday that there was doubt and confirmed on Friday lunchtime that there was no hope, especially with more heavy rain and gale force winds forecast, of the game going ahead.
With the next two “free” dates already taken up by League leaders Lydney (22 February) and basement side Old Centralians (15 March), Easter Saturday is the only available Saturday before the play-off matches scheduled for Saturday 26th.
However, in an increasingly complicated scenario, Old Reds are already committed to playing Old Centralians on Easter Saturday, with means the “All Whites” will now travel up the M5 on Easter Monday.
Further postponements could mean some matches – if they don’t affect promotion or relegation - not being played at all, but Newton’s opponents tomorrow, Redingensians, will be one of the sides looking to complete all their fixtures as they push for promotion.
The Reading based side, who are as usual competing near the top of the table, currently occupy second place in what appears to be a straight fight between themselves (67 points) and Bracknell (63 points) over who will be in the play-off spot behind Lydney (82 points) who are unlikely to be caught at the top.
Tomorrow’s visitors won the earlier clash on their ground after Newton had made a terrible start to trail 37-3 at half time before going on to “win” the second, but to lose the match 42-10.
Weather permitting, the Kitson’s sponsored match, will kick off at 2.30pm.
The Seconds, whose Devon Merit One game with Torquay was also rained off, will hope to play Devon One outfit Old Technicians in Plymouth tomorrow.
The Colts will make yet another attempt – the first two dates have failed – to play the first leg of the Devon Colts cup quarter final with Exeter. Whoever can find a playable pitch will host the match.
