Having been treated for breast cancer at Torbay Hospital 18 months ago, Jackie Holt who lives in Milber, wanted to give something back on her special occasion so asked people to donate money to the hospital's cancer units.
"I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo several operations and treatment at Torbay Hospital. The care I received was excellent and even though I work in the health service I felt I wanted to give something back," said Mrs Holt.
"I decided my 50th birthday was a milestone so decided to celebrate with a party and invite my family and friends to make a donation. I was overwhelmed with the response and as a result I have been able to donate over £1000."
Of the money raised £250 was given to the Breast Care Unit Rehab fund, £300 to the Breast Care Unit Reconstruction fund and £500 has been donated to The Lodge which supports all cancer sufferers and their carers.
Mrs Holt added:
"While in hospital I met and became friends with a fellow patient, Jackie Poole from Dawlish, in a similar situation and she was able to donate £450 to The Lodge by having a 'pink party', so we decided to present our cheques together."
"I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who have supported me and helped me through my illness and reach this goal."
