Accommodation for local people in the local area

Hi, I am a middle age chap living and working as a community working in the local area.
Since separating from my partner, 2 years ago, I have been happily sharing a house with a mate ( I basically have the upstairs he the down with shared facilities etc) in the area while rebuilding my life. I am a part time single parent who has started looking for larger accommodation which would be more suitable when my daughter stays and more often. I recently became a foster parent too, which therefore means the need for a move is now the highest item on the agenda.
I have joined Devon Home Choice and am also looking privately, the latter being expensive the former as rare as rocking horse poo! as they say.
As I daily continue my quest I certainly realise that being born, growing up and working in the area accounts for very little these days as 'others' certainly get priority!
Any comments would be good to hear as I intend to take this up with our new MP, also any advise with my "quest" would be most gratefully received without doubt.
