My favourite shops would be: Present = Sanders sweet shop in Bank Street and Past would be Baulsters, the smell as you went into the shop was unique or Matthews Bakery both of which used to be opposite Bearnes Primary School - no prizes for guessing that I went to Bearnes!!

Brains gone dead, but this used to be the finest hardware shop in Newton Abbot. Lots of little draws full of nails and screws and washers and things. You were served by men who wore brown coats and always knew exactly what size screw, nut & bolt etc, you needed for the job, AND you could buy just 1 instead of a packet of 100. It began with a G and has since been split into 2 shops, one sells toner cartridges and the other is a craft shop and it's near Argos. HELP what ever was it called???? Apologizes to Moncktons which was also a good shop but not quite in the same league.

ReportI believe what you're thinking of grumpywoman is W Chappell (or Chappell's to locals). A great shop. Forgot about those men in brown coats. Ha ha

Chappell's !!! That's it. Thankyou newtonnews. I don't know where the G came from but I am suffering from a bad reaction to the swine flu jab and, to quote some-one famous, I'm not doddery, doddery I'm not!!!!!!!!
Seriously, I still miss the old Chappell's it was like an alladins cave and Mr Chappell snr was a gem. An hour in there and then an hour in the old woolworth's and my day was made!!!

My Favorite shop from the past was Tower Handicrafts, run by two brothers who were both very knowlegable, and would spend time talking to you about the model that you were about to purchase, and tips and hints on how to build it. a very sad day when my favorite shop closed.
My present shop would be Sanders sweet shop (Bank street shop.) run by Mrs M Sanders, they have had the shop for years her and her daughter, and her late husband. With rows and rows of jars of old fashioned sweets.

I like Sanders too. It's always busy in there so hopefully it will remain a mainstay of NA for many years to come.

I like Gunters. It is a really old fashioned shop repairing clocks and watches. Gunter was from East Germany and he had loads of stories about how he came to this country. I haven't been there for ages so I hope it is still there. They also sold cuckoo clocks. Is Gunter still alive does anyone know?

Definitely bank street sweet shop- went to wolborough with the granddaughter. And the newagents down form the sally army hall. And the chip shop down that road too- used to stay open late on a friday so the guides could get chips on the way home. Also Bastins and the neat little crafty arty shop which had the most wonderful smell by the tower. And the three cooks bakery, the ear piercing and jewellery stall in the market square, BUT not M&S- that place always stunk, though it was handy in the summer for the air con. And what about the bike shop by the tower too!
I used to love the old gift shop in the market walk where oggy oggy pasty shop is now, they always had really lovely things and at least you could find something decent and different back then.

Oh yeah I remember Queen Street Videos! Blockbuster has all the new dvds but if you want older stuff like classic films it's pretty poor.

THERE USED TO BE A DELIGHTFUL 'LEATHER SHOP', NEXT DOOR TO LLOYDS BANK, WHERE YOU COULD BUY VIRTUALLY ANYTHING MADE OF LEATHER, AND WAS MANAGED BY A SOMEWHAT UPPER CLASS COUPLE, WHO WERE NEVERTHELESS MOST HELPFUL, AND THE SHOP OOZED THAT INIMITABLE SMELL OF LEATHER AS YOU WALKED IN... - BUT WHERE IS NEWTON ABBOT GOING NOW? ENDLESS CHARITY SHOPS, PUBS CLOSING, OH PURLEESE! BRING BACK NEWTON OF THE 70'S AND 80'S!!
AND REMEMBER THE WONDERFUL MARKETING PHRASE OF THE GLOBE HOTEL..."WHERE NEWTON ABBOT MEETS" ...DIDN'T THAT SAY IT ALL? ALL GONE NOW BUT NEVER MIND, WE'VE GOT WEATHERSPOONS NOW....IDEAL FOR THE NEW CLASS OF UNEMPLOYED DRINKERS.

Vine & video! Used to love going in there to buy MD 20:20 then nipping up either the top of the multi storey (before they fenced and gated it all) or down to Bradley woods to enjoy a quiet drink with friends! Kettles- the cheap shop that took over the old Dingles building in around 1988. And the bakery at the bottom of union street over the road. Their fudge custard doughnuts were to die for.
I so miss the old NA.
Vine& Video!! There's a blast from the past. I used to love Fred and Jen's sweetshop, just outside Dyron's. After school we'd all bundle in there and get sweets for the long walk home. Good times

Oh yes, the sweet shop by Dyrons. Used to call in there after swimming- cash went much further than in the leisure centres vending machines! Also a great many years ago (about 23) there was a house partway through the woods at Bradley across the bridge that you could buy ice creams from, and on Wolborough Street just by the old British Legion (later a newspaper office) one of the houses sold mars bars and stuff out of the front.
And the jewellery "house" in the market place wherethey did cheap ear piercings. Such fond memories.
My favourite place in Newton Abbot was the Black Cat Cafe in Msarket Square next to the old Drs Surgery. Can anyone remember that. It was I lived in Newton Abbot.

Gunter's is still going strong, still in the same shop at 13 Union Street, although Mr Gunter has now retired, he still comes in occasionally, and his son and daughter (Max and Josephine) are still wanting to keep it going. Opened in Wolborough Street 55 years ago, and moved to 13 Union Street in 1965!! Be sure of a friendly professional welcome.
W Cross and Co, East Street, have been selling 'quality' furniture for years. I bought a nest of tables from them the other day and was very satisfied.
