I've always been a fan of the Eastern Eye restaurant but thought I'd give the new Naz restaurant at the end of The Avenue a try. I made a reservation for 9:30 on Saturday, January 16th and arrived with father and girlfriend in tow - to be greeted by a scene reminiscent of Fawlty Towers...
The place was absolutely packed, but there wasn't a single person eating. Also someone (who I assume was management) was shouting at the rather bemused barman. Not good.
While standing at the bar for ten minutes without being acknowledged I had the opportunity to observe a steady stream of people complaining about the non-arrival of their food. Eventually I managed to order some drinks, only to be told by the barman (who told me that he was "just helping out" there) that there were no pint glasses available! At 10pm (thirty minutes in) we finally managed to get a drink and sat in the waiting area with two other groups who had also made bookings for 9:30. Fortunately I had a bag of sweets in my pocket to stave off hunger.
We decided to cut our losses and rang a taxi. In the 50 minutes that I was there the only food I saw presented was a birthday cake and during this time none of the staff (save the fill-in barman) actually spoke to us.

I think it's safe to say that I won't be going back.

Well, I could not disagree more: We had superb service. I took my Wife, Son and Daughter to NAZ last night, and we booked for 19.30. We were greeted at the door, asked if would like a drink, and within a few minutes, shown to our table. The restaurant was packed, even at that time of evening, which is always a good sign to me. The table was immaculately laid with sparkling cutlery on a perfectly clean white tablecloth. Our drinks arrived a couple of minutes later, and we were offered papadums and dips which we munched whilst perusing the large and excellent menu. You would have to be a very picky person not to find a dish off their menu. the Chefs special Dishes are very good indeed. We were given sufficient time to make our choices, and once we had done so, we chatted for about 10 minutes before the starters arrived. Beautifully presented, sensibly sized portions, and everything seasoned to perfection. First Class. The main courses arrived 10 minutes later, and again, the flavours were appealing, the presentation attractive, and the tastes of the various dishes was altogether excellent. The side dishes were prepared with as much care as the main courses, and four empty plates says it all to me. We didn't have sweets as we really had had enough to eat, and we are not that keen on sweets anyway, and the ONLY criticism I would make was that the bill took quite a while to arrive despite being asked for twice.......but hey....they were VERY busy, so no big deal. It eventually arrived with Mints to finish the meal. Will we go back.....100% yes. As for the staff. ALL of them were polite, attentive without being overbearing, and at all times ready to make every effort to ensure that we enjoyed our meal. Some people unfortunately treat restaurant staff as servants, but these guys (and the young girl serving drinks) were on the ball, and they deserve the praise in this review for this excellent meal. Well done all of you. See you soon NAZ. Keith & Teresa Simpson. Exeter.
