Stokes in Market Square, Newton Abbot, set to close

One of the mainstays in the Newton Abbot shopping scene – Stokes Greengrocers – is set to close.

The family-owned company that’s based in Bristol, with stores throughout the region, has gone into administration.

Today’s Herald Express reported that while branches in other south Devon towns will continue to trade, the branch in Market Square is set to close.

Sad indeed. I guess with Asda and Somerfield very close it was always going to be a struggle.

Asda finished Stokes off. I feel sorry for all the local suppliers who will now have to find new outlets for their produce.

Asda has been good for the town in other ways though drawing people into the centre to pick up stuff before and after their main shop.

I agree, I think having ASDA in Newton Abbot has done more good than harm.

Having an ASDA there is NOT good for butchers, bakers, fishmongers, fruit and veg shops, music shops, clothes shops... etc.
