Has anyone seen a Waxwing in Newton Abbot? Waxwings are exotic looking birds that occasionally turn up in winter from the continent when conditions there become particularly harsh. They feed on berries and are attracted to town centres and supermarket car parks where there are often plantings of trees and shrubs with plenty of fruits on them. Sometimes in flocks and not especially shy they should be easy to spot. One was reported in Albany Street yesterday so do look around the town streets and car parks when out shopping and please do post any sightings here.

Sorry no Waxwing pictures myself but check Google images, there are pages and pages of stunning photos. More than one species of Waxwing - ours is the Bohemian sort. Lots more information on Wikipedia. Did anyone see those in Buckfastleigh? Some have also turned up in Alphington. If the forecast cold returns then every chance of more birds arriving.
