Did you know that today is the start of British Sandwich Week (16 - 21 May)?

Do you know the origins behind the sandwich?

Well the story goes that John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, while gambling would frequently ask someone to bring him some meat between a couple of slices of bread – so as to not leave the gaming table.

Catching on, other gamers would say something along the lines of "I'll have what Sandwich is having" and eventually, people would just ask for "a Sandwich".

Newton Abbot certainly has its fair share of sandwich shops and stands… but where and what type do you go for?

"Hot turkey and stuffing all the way from the filling station," says Ed Nicholson who’s a regular lunchtime visitor to the Union Street stand.

"A dollop of cranberry tops it off," he adds.

The Devon Deli, and their brie and cranberry sandwich is a favourite for Carol Turner, who likes to eat in with friends along with a pot of tea.

On this site Patel20 says "The Park Cafe is my favourite place for a cheese and ham toasted sandwich! Every time I forget my lunch for work I always pop in and get a take-out."

My favourite has always been the hot pork offering from the sandwich stand in the market square… absolutely delicious.

Incidentally in Britain chicken salad tops the list of our favourite filling. The top ten most popular sandwich fillings are listed below:

-Chicken Salad Sandwich

-Mixed Selection

-Chicken and bacon Sandwich

-Egg & Cress Sandwich

-Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato Sandwich

-Cheese & Onion Sandwich

-Ploughman's

-Prawn Mayonnaise Sandwich

-Tuna & Sweetcorn Sandwich

-Chicken Sandwich
