Christmas shopping in Newton Abbot

The lights have been switched on in the town and Slade and Cliff are playing on the radio, so, if you haven’t already started, it’s high time you began Christmas shopping. 

Late night shopping will be held on each Wednesday in Newton Abbot up until and including December 22. For those with children, on these nights Santa will be present in his grotto at the clock tower and also on Saturday’s in the lead up to the big day. 

What do locals think are the best local stores for Christmas shopping?

“It’s got to be Austins, of course,” said Anna Kibby. “It’s my favourite store in Newton Abbot and they always make it look great around Christmas. My niece and nephew have already dragged me too their toy department.”  

Teenager Tara Brown loves Silva Lion. “It’s great for buying Christmas gifts. I always find stuff for my mum and aunt in there.”

Waterstones bookstore is Roger O’Lena’s shop of choice around Christmas. “I don’t get much time throughout the year to go to town, so it’s great to flick through all the new books at Christmas. Hopefully I’ll get some vouchers again this year too.”

For Ruth Lawrenson it’s the town’s smaller, quirky shops that get more attention around Christmas.

“Places like Magpies are great around Christmas. You can always hunt out unique gifts. I have a lot of relatives in America and they love all the quirky, English stuff.”

Newton Abbot market especially comes alive at Christmas and is a great place to get wrapping paper, ribbons… well pretty much all things festive.
