Morrisons has been confirmed as the supermarket partner for the local authority as part of its plan to regenerate the Broadmeadow area of Teignmouth.
-
Morrisons to partner the development in Broadmeadow, Teignmouth.
The deal, which is subject to final contract and due diligence, will see an overall investment in the project in excess of £20 million, providing a 20,000 square foot (sales area) supermarket and other developments.
A council spokesman said the deal‘s benefits include:
- More than 275 new jobs inclusive of the supermarket and new employment opportunities arising from the serviced employment land.
- Playing fields brought back into use on the upper plateau area.
- New serviced employment site for workshops and industrial units.
- A new link road to serve the Broadmeadow development, which includes the new supermarket and existing sports centre and nursery.
Broadmeadow was once a refuse tip and was then used as sports fields for many years. Concerns about contamination and safety led to the fields being closed for sports in 2001.
Cllr David Cox, Teignbridge Council Ward Member for Teignmouth West said:
“I'm very pleased that Broadmeadow will be used for sports again; at this time of austerity this investment really welcome. West Teignmouth is one of the most deprived wards in Devon, so it's great news that 275 new jobs will be created.
"I hope Morrisons will work with Kingsway Residents Association and West Bank, so that local residents get a chance of a job.”
