Police honed in on a local town pub on the afternoon of Thursday 18th June following a tip off that an armed robbery suspect was drinking inside.

Passers by were stopped in their tracks as several armed police and specialist negotiators surrounded The Union Inn. Approximately 20 minutes later, Police had managed to safely extricate the 49 year old from the building. The suspect was bundled into a waiting patrol car shortly after 5pm, where he was driven to Heavitree Police Station for further questioning.

Police had received reports of an armed robbery taking place earlier that morning in Ipplepen, and had traced the man to the Newton Abbot pub. Following onlooker’s descriptions of a ‘large knife,’ it was clear that police were leaving nothing to chance.

“He had a big army knife, Rambo style,” one local drinker confirmed, “these two police cars appeared out of nowhere, and suddenly the whole place was sealed off- it’s just not the sort of thing we see in Newton Abbot very often.”

Carl Reader, manager of the pub, commented that the atmosphere inside was much calmer than that on the street. “I didn’t recognise him, but he had been drinking here all day, and was keeping himself to himself- most of the drama was outside. It was a bit of excitement for everyone, but to be honest, our attention was soon focused on the Darts game taking place that evening.”

The man remains in custody.

This sounds totally terrifying and more than a little exciting.  Who'd have thought Newton Abbot would see this sort of thing?!
