Breaking News: Newton Abbot Factory Explosion

From the police website:

Police are helping fire and ambulance services currently dealing with a blaze at a the Teignbridge Propellors factory in Newton Abbot. 

Officers were called to the scene in Forde Road on the Brunel Road Industrial Estate by ambulance control at 8.30am today (18th March 2010) after reports of an explosion.

There are reports of four casualties (further details not known).

“A 50m exclusion zone has been set up around the factory and people living outside the exclusion zone, but close to the factory, are being told to stay indoors and keep windows closed while the fire service bring the blaze under control.”

    More Details:

    The four casualties were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from shock to burns. There were no life threatening or life-changing injuries.

    The fire was reported out at about 10.15am.  It was extinguished using six breathing apparatus wearers, three main jets, one hose reel jet, postive pressure ventilation, small tools and an aerial ladder platform.

    Ten percent of the factory space was damaged by fire, the remainder of the building was slightly damaged by smoke.
    Fire investigation is still taking place but the cause is believed to be accidental.

    Update: Two casualties have minor burns, two have more serious burns but they are not considered life threatening.

    Properties have not been evacuated but a 300m exclusion zone has been set up around the factory and people are reminded to stay indoors and keep all windows closed.
