According to a report in the MDA dated 4/12/09 the Belgian owned clay company Sibelco moved closer to gaining permission to develop the land it deems surplus, which currently acts as a buffer zone between the clay workings and the built up area of the town, when Devon County Council stated itwould not object to the scheme.

Unfortunately money talks & the big boys usually get what they want. It's not right though.

ReportDefinitely against it. The loss of the woodland was tragic as the extract from a botany report on rare fungi belwo clearly demostrates.
“The northern and eastern parts of the reserve consist largely of deciduous woodland a small part of which is believed to be undisturbed by quarrying and thus representative of the semi natural woodland of the Bovey Basin.
Probably the most interesting group of fungi in the Newcross Pond woodland are the larger ascomycetes. Rare and notable species include the false morels (only the fourth British record) the cup fungi (third British record) and Otidea apophysata (on the provisional red data list of British fungi).
Vespa conica, a morel like fungus, is normally rare but is known to fruit in the spring following a hot summer. The species , associated with hawthorn, was found there in 1991.
A number of clavarriroid fungi also occur, notably the scarce Clavaria fumosa.”
The group leading the opposition, KREAG, topped the polls in two parish council elections much to the dismay of the pro destruction of the site Lib Dem councillors who professed to not knowing it was there!! A lake the size of Decoy! To fell such an area of woodland required a permit from the Forestry Commision that was never applied for and the fact that it was a bat habitat added to the illegality of its destruction. Needless to say Teignbridge and Devon County Council who supported its destruction and development of the site in their structure plans never lifted a finger.
