Don’t spoil Newton Abbot!

I saw in last week’s MDA that Newton Abbot is being earmarked for re-development to cope with its rapid growth. There was talk of building a shopping centre in the town which would probably mean knocking down the cattle market. Shops like TK-Max, H &M and Pizza Express were mentioned.
This saddened me a little. At the moment Newton Abbot has a vibrant local feel with a number of quirky shops. Talk of large brand shops would mean the loss of a lot of this. I mean why would we want Pizza Express when we have the Pizza Café? TK-Max when we have plenty of nice clothes shops?
Do we really want to live somewhere that has brand names but no character.
Newton Abbot is a MARKET TOWN so why get rid of it’s very identity.

We don't really want Newton turning into a hippy town though surely!

ReportI think Totnes is a good model that towns should aspire too. They have lots of unique shops to the area and not too many massive chains. Newton Abbot is still better than most. If they sorted out Queen Street then it would be even better. I'm not sure what the solution is though to get more people using the bottom end of town.

ReportNo we do not need any more fast food places. we have Mc Donalds, K F C, burger king.
More shops for the over 50s as we all cannot aford Austins athough it is a very pleasent shop.Maybe a family shop like B H S .We also need a good fairly priced English resturant
instead of all the Chinese or Indian. bring a Wellworths to town saw it in Dorchester it was just like the old Woolies used to be.
