THE 'back road' between Torquay and Newton Abbot is a better alternative to the controversial Kingskerswell bypass scheme, environmentalists claim.

Torbay Friends of the Earth told the Kingskerswell bypass public inquiry that widening the heavily-used St Marychurch Road between Newton Abbot and Torquay would be an alternative to the £130million road scheme.

As the inquiry enters its final day today, objectors had their last chance yesterday to state their case against the road scheme which has been in the pipeline for more than five decades.

The inquiry has focused on a Devon County Council compulsory purchase order for 11 properties, land at Kerswell Downs and Kingskerswell playing field.

The order would pave the way for the new £130million link road.
