Newton Abbot Asda: Doughnut revelation

I doughnut believe it!

To my (perhaps naïve) shock and surprise I recently found out that Asda ‘fresh doughnuts’ are not in fact ‘fresh’.

And since discovering this revelation I have found several other sweet-toothed acquaintances who have too been somewhat taken for a ride in the cheap jam, apple, or custard doughnut game.

We all share the same tale of picking out a bag of five for 65p from Asda, Newton Abbot, and returning back to base (to share with friends or work colleagues) only to find that filling was rock hard.

Granted they were only 65p but ‘fresh’ is not frozen!

‘Yeah, we get them in from frozen overnight,’ a member of staff kindly reassured me when I took the bag back to the store for an explanation.

‘All supermarkets do this now. Have another bag… they should be fine,’ I was told.

Realising that venting my frustration on a store worker or manager would be futile, I emailed the head office about a month ago for answers about this misleading advertising.

Alas I am still waiting for a reply…

I guess, to have my doughnut demands satisfied, I might have to reach a little deeper into my pockets and purchase from a town bakery or cake shop.

Any recommendations?

Although Asda is cheap it doesn't have nearly the variety of Tescos.

Agreed, their bread is not a patch on a proper bakery. Never good also to hear behind the scenes story from any food place.

I used to work in asda and they are all frozen some doughnuts sitting there for two or three days before being bagged up, or they come straight out of the freezer and onto the shelf hence the 'rock hard' apperance. Also the bread is left for a while never take the sliced bread off the shelf because they stick two extra days on it making it 6 days it is their for. Also they would not let me go home when i had a vomiting bug so unhygenic. Beware!

Hallets Baker make really wonderful breads and cakes, but really expensive.  I have commented to Asda on many occasions about the breads and cakes being over cooked. I am pleased to say more recently the quality has improved considerably and not a burnt bun in sight!
