Plans for a large hotel and family restaurant at Newton Abbot Racecourse have been unveiled.
-
A 60-bedroom Premier Inn has been proposed.
The proposals – which have been formally lodged with Teignbridge Council – are for a 60-bedroom Premier Inn and a 220 seater Beefeater.
It’s been reported that the development could lead to more than 60 jobs.
Newton Abbot Races Ltd and Whitbread PLC are behind the proposals which will be on land currently used as a car park at the racecourse.
The plans also include staff accommodation and associated car parking, access and landscaping.
Vehicle will have access to the facility from the main gate – off the Tesco roundabout.
The proposals are part of the racecourse’s plans to become a facility throughout the whole year.
Details of the plans can be viewed on the Teignbridge Council website: Public Access (and enter a property search).

FAB! within walking distance of my house and somewhere else to go for a meal other than the INDIANS!! (nothing wrong with them but I like variety).

ReportWhat a great opportunity for for the continuing improvement of Newton Abbot.Lets hope the planners support this project. Its a pity that the locals arn't be as forward thinking as the firms that want to invest and develop in and around the town. Just look at what services the town offers, the schools, the banks, the parks, a new hospital all within excellant road and rail links. Just look at the towns around Newton, we are thriving.whilst others are sinking fast.

ReportI wouldn't really want a premier inn or beefeater too close to town though - no character just very functional buildings.

ReportNot the prettiest part of Newton Abbot. It would have been nicer if it could have been on the other side of the racecourse, perhaps with a footbridge over the river straight into the town centre and the station. The Tesco roundabout is a nightmare already trafficwise - this will only make it worse, and give a bad impression to visitors. What a pity - this could have been a real asset to the town but in this location the only winner it seems to me is going to be the racecourse, not the town.
