Despite national reports suggesting police failings in tackling anti-social behaviour around the country – the local authorities say that Teignbridge is working extremely well for local people and is held up as an example of good practice.

Do local people agree?

A council spokesman said:

“Teignbridge Council, Devon and Cornwall Police and other partners work closely together to reduce crime in Teignbridge as part of the South Devon and Dartmoor Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (SDD CDRP).

“The results are impressive, with overall recorded crime dropping every year for the past five years, and a recent public survey showing that nearly 80% of local people believe that the police and council are dealing with anti-social behaviour and crime that matter in Teignbridge.

“Meanwhile in Teignbridge's most recent 'Place Survey' for 2008/09 - the official public satisfaction survey used by the Audit Commission to rate council performance - fewer local people felt various forms of anti-social behaviour were a problem, a reflection of the action taken locally to address these issues.”

Cllr Marie Jenkins, Teignbridge Executive Spokesperson for Communities and Regulation said:

"We have a really strong partnership approach to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour in Teignbridge which is really making a difference for local people. We know Teignbridge is a very safe place to live and work, but in common with many places there is a higher fear of crime which isn't in proportion with the amount of crime actually committed.

"With that said, we're acutely aware of the impact that crime and anti-social behaviour can have on someone's life, especially when it's on a repeat basis. That's why we're taking really strong action to stamp out problems when they arise. This includes having a dedicated Anti-Social Behaviour Officer to co-ordinate our response.  This provides consistency for victims and offenders - if you like it's the equivalent of seeing the same doctor regularly rather than visiting lots of different ones. The ASB Officer really gets to know the people and the issues in depth, so we can spot problem areas or repeat offences quickly.

Superintendent James Meakin of Devon and Cornwall Police said:

"We continue to work very effectively with our local communities and other partners to develop solutions to respond to the concerns about anti-social behaviour in our community.

"If you do have concerns we want to know about them, and you are encouraged to call 08452 777444 and ask for our local neighbourhood team."
