University base to spend time with his family over the family period
and swept aside all opposition to win his club’s traditional Boxing Day
10 mile time trial. Smail has been keeping fit with a diet of
cyclo-cross races in the North West – races where he has been a regular
top six finisher.
Back on familiar roads Smail had a winning time of 24 mins 32 secs and was 49 seconds faster than club Chairman, Andrew Parker.
In third spot was Kenny Parker, who spends a lot of
time coaching the club’s teenagers. He took 25 mins 47 secs and beat
the club’s current long distance specialist Stephen Dart who took 26
mins 19 secs.
Fifth place went to Will Lynds who has been so busy
with business matters this close season that he has not been able to
put in much riding. Nevertheless he put in a respectable performance
finishing in 26 mins 22 secs.
There was a close contest between two of the club’s
veterans. Ian Deakin, feeling the effects of too high a level of
seasonal celebration and took 26 mins 35 secs to beat Paul Vincent by a
mere 4 seconds. Vincent, father of speedster Peter Vincent, intends to
have a serious crack at competition in the coming year and his
performance shows that he will have a good chance of achieving his
ambitions.
The father and son battle between Simon and Jonathan
Aske went, for the first time, to the younger rider. At the end of the
first circuit father, Simon held the upper hand by 5 seconds. On the
second circuit Jonathan put in a fine effort to finish in 26 mins 39
seconds and beat his father by 8 seconds.
Another returning club member was Geoff Ripley. Ripley now based in Bristol took 26 mins 56 secs.
The Kelly family members were well represented in
the race line up. Father Paul was the best of the quintet in 28 mins 37
secs. Next came 13 year old Joel some 4 seconds slower. 12 year old
Will, riding his first solo time trial achieved his target of beating
30 mins by 18 secs. Nephew Paul Moxon was another first timer. The
tri-athlete took 29 mins 28 secs. Fifth in the family was Becky Kelly
who despite the cool temperatures and wet roads completed the 10 miles
in 30 mins 4 secs – a personal best and the only rider to so at such an
unseasonable time for serious racing.
First timers Paul Fursdon (Kingsteignton) and Adrian James (Lustleigh) took 29 mins 22 secs and 29 mins 31 secs.
