Long standing members Don Beesley and Frank Frain kicked off proceedings thanking the 30 invited guests including local Mayor, Councillor Helen Humpries for attending before introducing the players who made it to the club’s handicap singles and doubles event finals.
The invitees were treated to some fine table tennis in which experience prevailed for Tony Munson and Mike Coxhead as they fought a two-point deficit back in three sets to beat Matthew Reed and Karolina Czyz in the doubles final taking a £30 prize. Reed was able to put the defeat to one side as he then went on to overcome a four point handicap against Beverley Coxhead in straight sets to pick up the £50 prize and the singles title.
All prizes for the evening were donated by Dawlish Table Tennis Club founder member Val Eaves who picked up the bat once more to exhibit her table tennis prowess in a friendly “first to five” against Counciller Humphries.
Counciller Humphries thanked the club for a marvellous evening as guests were treated to a buffet supper and some jaw-dropping magical entertainment from professional illusionist and club member Ozzy Dee. A quiz followed, aptly won by South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League Chairmen Geoff Read.
The new season kicks off this week with all 22 teams spread across three divisions beginning their campaigns for silverware in the league sponsored by Acacia Blinds.
