MOTOR SPORT: AN increased field of open-wheel racing cars will contest the second of Torbay Motor Club’s double-header hillclimb events at Mamhead House on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

Eleven contenders in the racing car classes will battle it out for overall honours and the possibility of lowering Mike Lee’s outright hill record set at the May meeting.

In the two-litre division, the winner of the club’s May Wiscombe Park event and Newton Abbot resident, Tony Wiltshire, will be sure to throw down the gauntlet to Ipplepen resident Roy Sims’ similar two-litre Ralt RT33 and Paul Crute’s Van Diemen Formula Renault FR34.

However, the potential dominance of the larger capacity machines is always likely to be threatened by the less powerful cars, whose agility and handling is as valuable as outright speed on the technically demanding track.

Contenders in both the club’s own, regional and marque hill climb championships will be striving for points in their respective classes as the season-end looms, guaranteeing intense competition.

The cars will be joined by more than 30 motorcycles and combinations competing in the National Hill Climb Association championship, running under the auspices of the ACU.

The events are not open to public spectators. However, marshals, novice or experienced, are welcome and should contact the Chief Marshal, Colin Capon, on 01803 557883, to arrange entry to the venue.

The event will support the Devon Air Ambulance Trust.
