Simon, Joy and Matt comment on the Newton Abbot golf scene.
Intrepid local golfers Simon, Joy and Matt give their lowdown on the area’s golf courses by answering a few simple questions…
Favourite course?
Matt: “Stover Park. I think it’s a cut above the others in the area. Always in great condition and a real challenge.”
Simon: “Hele Park. Although it’s only nine holes I love the greens there. They’re like glass. Very challenging.”
Joy: “Dainton. Although I find it hard, there are some great holes”
Favourite hole?
Matt: “The par-four third at Hele Park. A great view teeing off up from up high. There are several tricky bunkers and a small pond by the green. It’s also the hole where I got my first and only eagle!”
Simon: “The donut hole with the sand all around. I’ve been in bunker more times than I’ve been on green but it’s always a fun tee-off.”
Joy: “I like the (par-three) fifth at Hele Park. My most successful hole usually. It’s nice and easy. I also like the donut hole at Dainton.”
Least favourite hole?
Matt: “The 2nd at Wooleigh. It’s a par-three with water down the left and it always plays with my mind. If I don’t go in the water I’m always miles out to the right!”
Simon: “The par-five 6th at Hele Park – I’ve had many a 12 on there."
Joy: “Any on the open field part of Teign Valley. It’s all very bland and confusing. It’s a shame because the other parts of the course are very good”
Best pro shop?
Matt: “I’ve always liked Dainton, it’s very big and has a massive selection.”
Simon: “Hele Park – good deals and I used to a member there so I'm biased.”
Joy: “Hele Park has a very good driving range at the back of the shop to try out clubs and things.”
Favourite 19th hole?
Matt: “Dainton because of the views from there”.
Simon: “Dainton because they terrific roast on Sunday’s and you get a good view of the last few holes. I’d also recommend stopping off at Fermoy’s on the way back and buying a few bottles of their local ales.”
Joy: “Hele Park’s always friendly.”

Comments
Stover used to be a bit snobby but I think it's got better recently. Dainton is a bit up and down for my liking.
